"Did you forge any addresses tonight?"

"Why are you getting a dog?"

Jen: "You're the other color."
Me: "What color is that?"
Jen: "The color you're not on now."

"No hair. You should think about that."

"That's all you get. You don't get any more... I'm taking the rest of it."

"Turtles in your [unintelligible]."

"Look, there's you. The whole you. And then tomorrow there's a different one."

Sound Edit + Mix For Short Horror Film: "Shear Madness" Highlight Reel

A highlight reel of sound edit and mix from Influx Pictures/ CutJaw Film Co's "Shear Madness", a horror short that swept a variety of honors at 2017's Z-Fest. Music (and often dialog) have been removed to better highlight sound design, executed by Mike Hallenbeck at Junior Birdman Audio.

Directed by Jay Ness, the film depicts a hair salon appointment gone horribly awry. "Shear Madness" earned a Best Audio/ Sound Design nomination and took home numerous additional honors ranging from Best Makeup FX, Best Screenplay and Best Production Design.

For this reel, music has been removed to highlight sound design. Audio presented is both FX/ Foley and sweetening of preexisting production audio, including manipulation of production dialog.

"Gonna Put You On The Shelf": What Jen's Been Saying In Her Sleep, March 2017

Largely aimed at me this month, with alternating encouragement, low-level hostility and accusation.

"We're just going to pretend that you're actually there... for tomorrow and the next day."

Jen: "That's like your whole job... Got some places to go."
Me: "Where's that?"
Jen: "Not gonna tell you right now. One thing at a time... Hair free... Yeah. Seems OK... You finding out some stuff? That sounds good."

Jen: "I think you can do it. I think you know how to do everything you need to do. Just write it down. You're not going to remember it... Gonna sign up. Put your name on the list and then [unintelligible] will call you."
Me: "Who?"
Jen: "I'm not going to explain this. Get ready... You'll get it right. You're good at that. Sometimes you just need a little push."

[Something about "a boat for you..."] "You're just over there all the time... that's all you do... you hang out over on the other side there. You don't do a lot of different things. You're usually over there."

Jen: "Put you on the shelf."
Me: "What would I do there?"
Jen: "What do you do here?"

"You live in two different countries."

Jen: "Gonna drool on you. Maybe someday you'll get your own."
Me: "My own what?"
Jen: "Everything you need."

"I haven't been talking to you or about you."

Junior Birdman Audio Is One Year Old!

Roughly one year ago I moved a bunch of gear out of my house and into a snazzy, cozy space in Northeast, where I opened up shop as Junior Birdman Audio. Since then we've created tons of audio content for films, ads, animation, industrials, e-learning, and even a wedding video-- providing voiceover recording, sound design, original music, Foley, ADR, audio restoration, and final mix. It's been a great ride so far, and we thank our many collaborators whose continued support makes the coming year look so bright.

Also, as you can see, we have our own coasters now. Which is how you can tell we're not messing around.

Thanks to everyone who's lent a hand, and here's to the future!

"Shear Madness" Snags 15 Nominations at Z-Fest

I'm pleased to announce that "Shear Madness", a short horror film for which Junior Birdman Audio provided sound edit and mix, has been nominated for fifteen awards at this year's Z-Fest. In particular, I'm honored that my audio work has been recognized with a nomination for Best Sound Design.

The film, co-produced by Influx Pictures and CutJaw Films, features a really impressive array of practical visual effects. It's set in a hair salon (a place I have no use for), and without giving anything away, I'll just say that pretty much everything you can imagine going awry in that scenario really, really goes awry. It's snagged (see what I did there?) nominations in the following categories:

- Best Actress : Brittany 'Benjamin' Deutsch
- Best Supporting Actress : Sierra Schermerhorn
- Best Screenplay : Ian Withey
- Best Editing : Jay Ness
- Best Sound Design : Mike Hallenbeck
- Best Makeup & Costume Design : Nicole Fae & Ryan Schaddelee
- Best Production Design : Andrea Bursott
- Best Cinematography : Ben Enke
- Best Lighting : Billy Straub
- Best Villain : Sierra Schermerhorn
- Best Hero / Heroine : Brittany Benjamin
- Best Fight Scene
- Best Prop
- Best Suspense/Horror/Adventure Film
- Best Film

The film will receive one more Z-Fest screening at the "Best Of" showcase and awards ceremony on March 24th. More info + tickets

Here's the trailer for "Shear Madness":

Congrats to the cast and crew of this and all the nominated films. May the odds be ever in your favor!

"You're The Banana Man": What Jen's Been Saying In Her Sleep, Jan- Feb 2017

A couple of months' worth here. As usual, lots of commentary on my imagined behaviors and essence.

"You have to clue that in... the password."

"There's a different kind of version. I don't think we need to watch it though. It's not for you... Cans of pop. All the different colors. You're made of all the different cans."

Jen: "It's not like you need one."
Me: "Need one what?"
Jen: "I think I'm not gonna tell you."

"I see you here."

"You're the banana man... Greek salad."

"You have a bad attitude."

"SCOTLAND! That's what it's all about."

"You don't have hair, but you're looking for something... You know about that."

"All that comes to you and the other part. You don't have to volunteer any other part of that program... You can have that too. It's upside down."

"That's not the point of anything."

"It's like the way... it's all of it... There it all is. You and everything you came with."

"It's like you're gonna get your own kind of box... That's what you're gonna do from now on... Is that you? Do you know what you're supposed to be doing?"

Ordinal (SW/NE)

"Miljohn Ruperto: Geomancies" opens this weekend at The Roy and Edna Disney/ CalArts Theater in Los Angeles. The exhibition includes a film featuring sound design, original music and mix that I created at my studio Junior Birdman Audio.

The exhibition copy describes the film thusly:

"The centerpiece of the exhibition, Ordinal (SW/NE), 2017, is an experimental documentary created with filmmaker Rini Yun Keagy. The film traces the cultural and environmental influences of a soil-dwelling, pathogenic fungus, Coccidioides immitis, and its associated disease, valley fever, in California's Central Valley. Interweaving past, present and mythological time, the film draws upon historical and cultural references, including the plight of migrants during the Depression, the spread of the disease in recent years, contemporary theories of climate change, and the significance of the desert wind in ancient Assyria. In Ruperto and Keagy’s film, natural phenomena remain neutral, fleeing from any kind of judgment and avoiding binary oppositions of positive and negative, destruction and regeneration, life and death."

Music, Sound Design and Vocieover for Animation: Dad Movie

A whimsical animated take on early fatherhood from Flush Studios. My role: composer, sound editor, re-recording mixer. I also narrated the piece, providing voiceover performance and engineering.

The short premiered at 2016's Z-Fest, where it won the Specialty genre for animation, and went on to screen at Minnanimate 5 later in the year.
